Get an awesome Task Killer for your Galaxy Young

This app is called Advanced Task Killer. By advanced it doesn't mean it is complicated but it's actually very simple.
It takes only 2 taps on your phone screen to get the job done. You simply start up the app, either select the tasks which you want to kill or just go ahead and tap on KILL selected tasks. The task killer automatically chooses which tasks are useless for killing, commonly mistaken is the custom launcher and widget apps running in the background, it auto-selects them so you better unselect those apps. If it's just a launcher you can just directly press the home button to start it up, if you've made it a system app it should come back by itself.
Another thing I really like about this is that even it doesn't run in the background as it appears on the list and is selected by default. So not only do you kill the useless apps but you kill this app aswell.
This was a very handy tool for me when I was with CyanogenMod7 as it didn't have a task killer other than to go to Applications -> Running Services. It's very needed on CM7 because once you gather up alot of tasks it becomes very sluggish.

A screenshot of the Task Killer on Galaxy Y:

Task Killer is only 103kb in size and it's free in the Play Store. If you like it alot you can support the developer and purchase the PRO version.

[ROM] Hyperion 8 Project 2013 for Galaxy Y

Some of you might probably be aware that Hyperion 8 has been released at xda-developers forums but the thread got closed down for investigation by a mod and on top of that the download link has been removed. So why wait for the investigation to be done? Get the ROM here, at GalaxyYArchive!

JellyBean experience at its best
Everything you love about Hyperion and JellyBean — the gorgeous UI , fast and fluid performance, battery life — is everything you’ll love about the new Hyperion, too. And you can have the best of both it in one ROM.

A rom worthy of all Galaxy Y
Fast performance, superb stability, mouth watering UI, useful features — It's something for everyone. And Everything!

Incredible performance
Known for its fast, fluid performance, Hyperion doesn’t disappoint. It features 23 powerful and power-efficient CPU governors and 4 I/O Scheduler, which makes everything you do feel smooth and natural.
Hyperion wouldn’t be Hyperion without incredible battery life. Even with so much performance packed into such a small space, it still lasts up to 2 days on a single charge*. So you can read, watch, play, write, and create whatever you want, as long as you want.*battery life based on moderate usage with all radios turned on at default policy settings.

Hyperion 8 highlights:
Total ear-gasm: ALSA (AlsaProject) + Beats Audio Engine v2
We combined and tuned up two sound engines for superb sound quality when listening to music. This time, sound enhancements are activated at startup without the use of DSP Manager. What does that mean? No more force close when you connect/disconnect mass storage mode on PC.

Mouth watering pixel goodness
Like JellyBean looks but sluggish like old granny? Worry no more! Hyperion 8 combines JellyBean UI and transparency into a piece of art. We don't simply take frameworks, systemUI and put it in a blender. We make sure we put "what belongs together".

Project butter Hyperion style
We combined all the best tweaks out there for a superb super smooth UI. Others would say "No! That's not real! Project butter is JB only", yes that is correct if you can't read between the lines.

More juice more fun!
We hate running out of juice as much as you do, so we made sure you can get the most of your battery. We put 23 CPU governors and 5 IO schedulers to tame that nasty CPU! And with deep sleep? Your phone will get more sleep than you do! -well at least for me this is a true statement.

Features:
Basic - all custom roms must have:
  1. De-Odexed
  2. Zipaligned
  3. Recompressed APKS
  4. Optimized APK Images
  5. Rooted
  6. BusyBox and BusyBox run-parts support
  7. Apps2SDenabled
Common - though not working in other roms:
  1. 15 Toggle Notification Drawer
  2. 6 Lockscreens from Gingerbread AOSP/CM with custom app starter and gesture unlock
  3. Status bar Tweaks + TEAM battery bar
  4. 4-way Reboot Options
  5. Expanded Power Menu (because themers and mods crash systemUI most of the time, we need other ways of rebooting)
Unique - not all custom roms have:
  1. No SMS Bug
  2. No false Android version
  3. No useless features
  4. Least branding (Like creed parts or cod parts or whatever. We don't like that. It's your phone, not ours)
Advanced:
  1. EXT4 File System Support
  2. CIFS
  3. Swap Support
  4. BaCeM Tweak
  5. UnderVolt Support
  6. Firewall Support (DroidWall Open-Source Project)
  7. Ad-blocking host file
Plus - only Hyperion:
  1. Supercharged Hyperion Core v2 with Adrenaline Engine v4.4
  2. Transparent JellyBean user interface
  3. Ear-gasmic sound quality
  4. Integrated Autostart manager, Firewall and Network Unlocker
  5. Modular system structure
  6. System Replacer
Experimental:

  1. Force GPU Rendering - Force use of GPU for 2D rendering
  2. Disable HW overlays - Always use GPU for screen compositing
  3. Allow purging of assets - Purging of bitmap memory assets allows freeing of more RAM when needed (you can now get as low as 85-90mb used RAM)
  4. 32bit transparency - Better graphics performance and full transparency support

How to easily fix MD5 error for nandroid backups

    Sunday, January 27, 2013
    Posted by Unknown
    Tag :
Most of you have probably stumbled upon this error when trying to restore a nandroid backup of your rom.
Seen threads at forums with people asking on how to fix this, seeing various tools posted and all that but you don't really need tools for this but a simple text editor. This method has been tested personally by me and it works perfect. Thanks to GalaxyUnlocker for showing me the discovery.

So to begin, you would need Notepad, Notepad++ or any other text editor on your computer.
After you have made your nandroid backup you should know that you have a folder in your SD card named clockworkmod. Inside that folder there should be another folder named backup and after it one with the date you took it.
Inside that folder we've got the nandroid.md5 file in question.
Right-click on it and choose to edit it:
    Step 1:
Right-click the md5 file and choose to edit it.
     Step 2:
This is the contnet you should see inside the file.
     Step 3:
Select it all with your mouse or CTRL + A and delete it all.

After that you save the file, boot into recovery mode and begin the backup. It should finish succesfully.

How to install CM7 v2 RC2 on Galaxy Y (Video)

    Wednesday, January 23, 2013

So here is the video as requested by some viewers, I've made a step-by-step installation guide starting off with the kernel, then the ROM and finally an optional move which is installing the latest version of whitexp's kernel (v1.3.3)

    Downloads:
    CWM-MadTeam - Click here.
    CM7 v2 RC2 zip - Click here.
White kernel 1.0.1.zip - Click here.
White kernel 1.3.3.tar for Odin (optional) - Click here.

Save all of the 3 files except the tar file on your SD card and follow the instructions in the video:

My review of the current release:
This release of CM7 boots up extremely fast and so does it shut down.
There should be a patch laying around somewhere for the Wi-Fi problem, it seems that once turned off, you get some Error message showing up there. A temporary solution that replaces the "reboot trick" is to type in the following text in the Terminal Emulator (you get that with CM7)
    su
    rmmod bcm4330
Alternatively you can flash this zip: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k4o2kbyyphjceey/dhd1.1.zip

The screen problem with rotating the screen seems to have been fixed, so it rotates pretty normal now.
With the inclusion of the HW libs recently released by Broadcom, this release has become much more faster and smoother in animations and such. Some games still seem to have problems being played though.
I've tested networking and it's working 100%. I can use my packet data, I can make and receive calls, same for messages.
From time to time some weird screen glitches might occur so to fix that, rotate the phone to landscape then back to portrait and it should be gone.

I PMed whitexp about the Angry Birds problem and he told me to use a higher version of the game and it works fine unlike version 2.1 for example which freezes after 10 seconds.
It seems most apps work without a problem but the same doesn't go for games. Cut the Rope freezes, Doodle Jump is all messed up, Pou freezes aswell, etc.

Another thing I've noticed is the huge lag when multitasking with the music player working on the background. Once you start a song and minimize it, the performance becomes quite awful and atleast 10 times my music paused by itself or it just stopped and the icon in the status bar just disappeared, but that may be because I didn't have Focus loss ducking option enabled, will see what happens later today.
Don't know if DSPManager has anything to do with slowing down the performance as it used to have a similar issue on stock roms atleast for me.

This latest build seems very stable and I personally am going to stick with this ROM as it's good enough now for daily use. I mean, you've got internet 100% working both WiFi and packet data. Calls, messages, some games, apps, etc.

    Problems I noticed:
    • Bluetooth still hasn't been fixed.
    • Camera still displays a white screen for previewing, it can take shots without a problem though. Videos cannot be made.
    • Still no automatic media scanning, you need to use Meridian Player's rescan feature to do so.
    • Bad headphone support.

Save up on mobile data with Opera Mini 7

    Monday, January 21, 2013
    Posted by Unknown
My operator offers me an unlimited data plan, but once I hit the cap (in my case it is 300MB), the downloading and uploading speed goes very low and makes it quite impossible to browse heavy websites which don't have mobile versions.
When browsing the internet on my Samsung Galaxy Y, I always try to save up and stay away from reaching the 300MB cap so I do stuff such as disable image displaying on my stock browser to just download the text only, etc.
Thanks to Opera Mini 7 browser for Android, I now save up a lot of mobile data with it's unique compression technology. The developers claim that it saves up to 90%.

The app compresses the web data before it is delivered to your phone thus saving you mobile data.
To check the statistics for amount of data used and amount of data saved, you tap on the red "O" button on the bottom right corner, then go to "Help", then "Data Usage"

Overall, the Opera Mini is a very neat Android browser with neat features, very user-friendly UI and it loads websites very fast so not only do I recommend it because of the compression technology, but because it's a good browser for daily use.

    Cut The Rope FULL FREE

    Sunday, January 20, 2013

I've been playing this game for over a week now it's a great brain teaser. Unlike most games from the brain & puzzle categories which could make you give up at some point, this one is challenging and very easy to conquer at the same time. It's filled with levels too.
Basically you need to cut the rope to get the candy to the frog-like thing and when you go further into the game things get tricky and you also encounter cool new stuff to use that help you. Also in order to unlock a new box, you need to have collected a various amount of stars to do it otherwise you can't go further, so having the lowest of 2 stars and the rest 3 stars in the previous levels is a must if you wish to continue. Also, this is the full game which is now free in the Google Play store but with ads popping up which shouldn't be bothering at all.

    Play Store description:
Cut the rope to feed candy to little monster Om Nom®! 250 million downloads around the world of this phenomenal puzzle game. 325 levels and more to come!
A mysterious package has arrived, and the little monster inside has only one request… CANDY! Collect gold stars, discover hidden prizes and unlock exciting new levels in this addictively fun, award-winning, physics-based game!
    Key features:

    • Innovative physics gameplay

    CyanogenMod7 2.0 RC2 for Galaxy Y (With HW libs)

    Saturday, January 19, 2013
    Posted by Unknown
    Tag :

In 18th January whitexp from xda-developers released the Release Candidate 2 of version 2.0 of CyanogenMod7 for Galaxy Young which includes various fixes and ofcourse, the latest released libs by Broadcom. This means that this build runs even smoother than the older one and you can even play some games decently.

Note: The changelogs which you will read from RC1 are included in RC2. (The version which is posted here for download).

    v2.0 RC1:
    • Added new libs for HW acceleration provided by Broadcom (Games should now work good, animations should be faster now)
    • Fixed media scanner with 3rd party apps
    • Minor fixes for ldpi layouts
    • Minor fixes for wifi (wpa_supplicant service hasn't been fixed for now)
    • Removed gralloc opensource and using prebuilt gralloc from Broadcom.
    v2.0 RC2:
    • Included WiFi module
    • Minor fixes for build.prop
    Download CyanogenMod7 v2.0 RC2: Click here.

    Installation instructions:
Before doing all of this I would recommend that you flash to a clean stock rom and kernel to stay away from all the bootloop hassle.

    Part 1: Installing the kernel:
    1. Download Odin - Click here to download.
    2. Extract the rar file using WinRAR, 7zip or any other archive program
    3. Run the Odin program
    4. In PDA field find and choose white.1.0.1.tar - Click here to download white.1.0.1.tar
    5. Start your Galaxy Y into Downloading mode (hold Power button + Volume down + Home button) and connect it to your computer, you should see a yellow colored box indicating that your phone is connected to an USB port.
    6. Leave all of the options as they are and just click on Start.
    7. Wait for it to be done, your phone should reboot and you should have white's kernel.
    8. Alternatively, you can just flash the kernel using recovery mode - Click here to download flashable zip
    Part 2: Installing CyanogenMod7:
    1. Boot your SGY into Recovery mode (hold Power button + Volume up + Home button)
    2. You should be in ClockworkMod Recovery.
    3. Go to mount and storage
    4. Choose Format system
    5. Choose Mount system (if you do not see this option, system is already mounted and you don't have to mount)
    6. Go back, choose wipe data
    7. Choose Install zip from sdcard
    8. Find cm-7-20130107-madteam-whitexp-RC2-totoro.zip (CM7) which you just downloaded from here and choose it
    9. Then choose Yes
    10. Wait for it to install it, press the back button and reboot.
    11. Enjoy the latest stable CM7.
If you are having any problems with the flashing, or want to post some feedback on how it works for the rest of the viewers, feel free to leave a comment.
If you wish to report bugs and problems, please direct them to it's official xda thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996275

    DISQUS is here!

    Friday, January 18, 2013
    Posted by Unknown
Great news! DISQUS comment system has been implemented to the blog.
The old one was getting kind of... old. You can now rate comments up/down, you can still reply to them etc.

I am now going to show a quick setup guide for newbies.

So to begin, view a post, then scroll down where the comment field is and you should see this:
So a good idea would be to connect your Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or DISQUS profile with it, so that you can be aware of notifications.

Choose which one you would like to connect and it would ask for permission:
And so after you do that and comment on a post for example asking a question, and I or anyone else replies to you:
The next time you load a post and see the comment field, there should be a notification:
Click on the notification and it will bring you to this screen:
Then just click there and it will bring you to the reply to your comment. It's simple.

Probably all of you know that while using certain apps on your Galaxy Y for some time, they create temporary files which are stored on your internal memory and can get in the way when installing new apps. This happen to any Android phone by the way.

In this guide I will present you a really simple and user-friendly cache cleaning app called 1Tap Cleaner.

You can download it for free in the Google Play store. There is also a PRO version which you can check out if you will enjoy using the free one.

Now ofcourse you can clean cache manually by yourself, but you would need to go to each app and press the "Clear cache" while this app gets the job done in seconds.

When you first start up 1Tap Cleaner, you should see 4 options for clearing the cache.
    1. Cache Cleaner - This option clears all of your apps cache at once by just tapping on an "OK" button.
    2. History Cleaner - This option clears all of your history such as the entered texts on your browser apps, Play Store, YouTube app, etc. (I wouldn't really recommend doing this if you need to keep your history as this frees up a very small amount of memory).
    3. Call/Text Cleaner - This clears all of your call history and messages.
    4. Default Cleaner - This option clears anything you have set by default such as for example a homescreen replacement app (Launcher). Let's say I have set Holo Launcher to appear by default when I press the Home button  on my phone and it would take me to Holo Launcher instead of my old launcher. This option will clear the set to default option and restore your old launcher or whatever you have set to default.
In this guide we will be mainly focusing on clearing the cache of the apps at once (first option).

When you choose the first option, a window should pop up telling you how much memory your current cache collected takes:

So just choose OK and it will clear the cache for you. Clearing the cache does not delete your apps data or games' savegames. They remain completely safe.

Another nice feature is the Auto clear interval.
When you go to Settings, you should see it there (first option).

You can choose an interval starting from 1 hour to 2 weeks:
And that is how you clear your app cache in just a few seconds.

    Go Launcher EX Review
The Samsung Galaxy Y is still running on Android Gingerbread. But you can get the Jelly Bean style experience and a complete makeover for your phone with GO Launcher EX.
A launcher is the interface that you see when you are using your phone and it includes everything visual when you navigate through the Galaxy Y: the Home screen, all submenus, the app drawer, and all the transition effects. All manufacturers, except Google with their Nexus series, use their own customized version of the Android launcher, mainly to differentiate themselves from competing companies. Samsung calls its version of the Android launcher TouchWiz. What most users don’t know is that Samsung’s launcher can be replaced by a different one.

There are a number of great launchers available in the Google Play store and each has its advantage. GO Launcher EX is by far the most creative launcher among them all with more than 50 million downloads so far! There is a plethora of themes available that you can use to style your Galaxy Y in ways you haven’t imagined possible, ranging from themes for the main launcher down to themes for the smallest detail such as icons and widgets. It also comes with a number of optional widgets such as a weather widget, a calendar widget, a task manager, a clock widget, and several more. The team behind GO Launcher has made its launcher open to designers who can submit themes to the company to make them available to users. Many of these themes are free while some others must be purchased. Let’s walk you through the steps to give your Samsung Galaxy Y a refreshing look:

Step 1: Set Up Go Launcher EX:

Install GO Launcher EX for free from the Google Play store. Upon opening the app, swipe through the initial screens until you see the “Top 10 GO Launcher Themes” screen and tap the More Themes button. This lets you dive right into the themes store, where you can try several themes until you’ve found your favorite one. You can also skip this step and use the standard theme, which resembles a typical Android Jelly Bean look.

    Step 2: Select a Theme:

Try as many themes as you like from the theme store. You can also use the Google Play store to search for more themes. I’ll be using one of the most popular themes for this launcher: Cyanogen GO Launcher EX theme. It resembles the look and feel of the most widely used aftermarket custom ROMs on the market: Cyanogen Mod. Once you’ve found your favorite theme, download and install it. The launcher will automatically switch to your selected theme.

    Step 3: Select Widgets:

GO Launcher EX places many of its available widgets as a shortcut on the Home screens. When you tap on a shortcut, you’ll be taken straight to the download page in the Google Play store, where you can download and install the widget on your phone. The shortcut will then be replaced by the widget. GO Weather EX is the most downloaded widget for this launcher.  Let’s install it and apply a separate theme to it. I enjoy the HTC style theme a lot. Tap on the widget > Settings icon > Theme settings, and select a theme to download. To apply the theme, repeat this path and look for the “Installed” section.

GO Launcher EX can be highly customized to your needs and there are just too many details to showcase. Tap on the Menu key and familiarize yourself with its features. Home screens can be customized by long-pressing them. Apps can be grouped into folders by long-pressing them in the app drawer. And if you get bored after a while by the current theme, give your Samsung Galaxy Y yet another makeover by selecting a new style from the theme store. GO Launcher EX is backed by a community of freelance designers, which submit new themes regularly. It’s worth checking them out!
