This is pretty basic but good for beginners and way more secure than the default lock screen you get after you start up the phone for the first time.
Ok so first of all, you go to the menu and then Settings.
Menu should look like shown in the screen below:

Go to Location and Security
Then look for Change screen lock

Get in there and you should see 4 options.

First is to disable screen locking (Not recommended)
Second is to draw a pattern, e.g.:

You need to draw with your finger, not tap on each circle like making a combination.
Third is to set up a PIN that you have to enter to unlock your screen. I wouldn't recommend this if you are an easy forgetter.

And fourth is to set a password, this time with both digits and letters.

After you are done, here are the results:

Note that I only showed an example of the Pattern lock, you can test the rest yourselves.
